LARGE REDWOOD TREES lined their path while the light of the sun barely pierced the leaves and branches. Mark smelled the scent of pine and grass. Father Gregory rode Laurel’s steed all by himself, while Bella and Laurel rode together.

As he rode, Mark thought he saw something off to the far corner of his sight. He couldn’t place it. It was just a blur of color. Bella and Laurel didn't notice. He placed his hand closer to his pistol.

“Keeper, it is fine,” Laurel said.

Two small figures with butterfly wings came out of the forest.

“Keeper, these are fairies. They are our friends and allies.”

They dressed in dark green leather and flew toward them.

“Hello, Keeper, my name is Arn, and the other fairy is Mela. We welcome you to our forest.”

“Thank you, I am Mark. This is Brenda and Father Gregory.”

“We welcome you here. Princess, we heard about the fight at the queen’s castle. We are sorry. We don’t know who survived.”

“Thank you, Arn. Are we expected?”

Arn said, “Yes, we knew you were coming here. We felt your presence as soon as you entered our forest.”

“Please lead on.”

Arn and Mela flew in front. Laurel led her horse, and they moved down the path.

Brenda said, “Nobody will believe us back at home about the fairies.”

Mark said, “It is a land of constant surprises.”

“How do you think Father Gregory is taking all this?”

“I am not sure.”

Mark heard something. It sounded like whistling and music, but this music was light, like the sun and air. They kept on moving, and the sounds got louder.

“It’s beautiful,” Brenda said.

The princess said, “It is the fairies.”

After they took a turn through several trees, they encountered a sight Mark was sure he would never describe. Fairies flew from trees and branches. Their dwellings were on the highest of the branches. He was reminded of birdhouses, but the dwellings were more elaborate in scope.

“Ah,” he said.

Arn and Mela stopped at the outskirts of the village. Several fairies flew to them, dressed in armor and weapons.

Arn said, “This is the Princess and the Keeper.”

The fairies stopped their advance and flew away. Laurel dismounted, and they also did the same.

Mark said, “What are we doing here?”

“We need to prepare. The fairies will know where to find Malifar.”

He thought the princess knew where to find the dark elf, but he let the thought cease. He didn’t want to argue with the princess. They walked into the center of the village. The fairies buzzed around them. Most of them said, “Hello, Princess.”

Arn said, “We have a place for you. Our King will summon you when he is back.”

They walked down a path into a clearing with tents.

“Keeper, I have visited with the fairies before. They know about the fields of magic. They could sense Malifar. But they cannot sense the Evil Wizard. Their magic are limited to forest areas. Mailfar is an elf and would dwell in the deepest woods.”

“Thank you. Are we safe here?” Mark asked.

“Yes, for the time being,” Laurel said.

They moved around the tent.
